Master of Science in Geomatic for Disaster Risk Reduction (MSc Geodrr) - School of Humanities


  • OVERVIEW

    MSc GeoDRR aims to produce graduates who are knowledgeable, competitive, principled and skilled in the theory and practice of Geomatics/Geospatial in dealing with an organization’s disaster risk reduction needs.

    Program Education Objectives for MSc GeoDRR are:

    • Competent graduates in theory, interpretation, methods and techniques related to the applications of GIS & remote sensing in disaster risk management.
    • Graduates who are able to conduct research using the latest GIS and remote sensing technology in disaster risk management.
    • Graduates who have good communication skills and demonstrate leadership qualities in disaster risk management.
    • Graduates who are responsible, entrepreneurial and practice lifelong learning in disaster risk management.
    • Ethical and professional graduates in disaster risk management.

    Programme Learning Outcomes

    Students who enrol on this Master's Degree program will have in-depth knowledge of subjects related to disaster risk reduction. Students should be able to achieve the following learning outcomes at the end of the program. This program is offered to prepare graduates who are able to use scientific knowledge and analytical skills to make decisions in solving problems related to the field of disaster risk reduction. Graduates of this program will be able to assume management responsibilities in carrying out technical assignments.

    Program Learning Outcomes for MSc GeoDRR are:

    • Apply science and technology knowledge in the field of disaster risk reduction.
    • Formulate and provide creative, innovative and effective solutions to problems in the field of disaster risk reduction.
    • Communicate effectively in writing and verbally between graduates and the community.
    • Demonstrate collaboration skills with stakeholders in social and community issues related to disasters ethically and professionally.
    • Practising self-advancement through continuous academic and professional development.
    • Demonstrate leadership skills, autonomy and responsibility in disaster risk management projects.
    • Integrating digital tools and software for disaster problem-solving.
    • Demonstrate skills in analyzing and interpreting numerical and graphic data in solving problems related to disaster risk reduction.
  • ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    A. Bachelor's degree 

    1. CGPA of at least 3.00 / 4.00; or 
    2. CGPA between 2.50 - 2.99 with the following additional conditions: or 

    a) Research experience for at least one year; or 

    b) Work experience in related field for at least one year; or 

    c) At least one (1) academic publication in the relevant field; or 

    d) Grade B for major/elective courses; or 

    e) Grade B+ for final year project 

    1. CGPA between 2.00 - 2.49 (Bachelor's Degree with Honours) with the following additional conditions: or 

    a) Research experience for at least five (5) years; or 

    b) Work experience in related field for at least five (5) years; AND 

    c) At least one (1) academic publication in the relevant field; or 

    d) Grade B for major/elective courses; or 

    e) Grade B+ for final year project

    B. APEL A (Level 7)

  • LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

    (Applicable for International Applicants Only)

    The minimum score for each programme can be vary from the below list, candidates are required to check for each programme requirements.

    • A minimum of Band 6 for IELTS; or
    • A minimum score of 60 for TOEFL (Internet-based); or
    • A minimum of Band 8.5 for TOEFL Essentials (Online); or
    • A minimum score of 169 for Cambridge English: Advance (CAE)/Proficiency (CPE) /Preliminary (PET) /First (FCE)/ Linguaskill Online min. score 169/ Occupational English Test (OET) min. score 250; or
    • A minimum score of 59 for Pearson Test of English (PTE); or
    • A minimum of Band 109 for CIEP Level (ELS); or
    • A minimum of Band 4 for Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

    Exemption is given to candidate if:

    • English is the candidate’s mother tongue or National Language; or
    • Candidate graduated from an Institution of Higher Learning in which the medium of instruction at Bachelor and/or Master degree level is English (statement of proof required)

    IMPORTANT: Candidates are required to provide any of the above English result upon application. Incomplete application will be rejected.
