Master of Public Health


OVERVIEW
The Master of Public Health (MPH) programme is a two-semester course conducted fully in English. Besides advanced theoretical inputs, candidates are also exposed to hands-on learning in analytical skills, rigorous training in research methodology and direct field experience in the community. The general objective of the programme is to produce competent health professionals with appropriate knowledge and skills in public health.  Graduates from the programme are expected to be able to plan, implement and evaluate effective public health programmes that can improve the quality of life of the community. The programme is most suitable for medical doctors who are faced with the challenges of promoting public health in developing countries.
 
Specific Objectives of the Programme 
 
On successful completion of the programme, graduates are expected to be sufficiently competent to:
  1. Identify health problems in the community and country
  2. Apply public health knowledge to plan and implement action plans to prevent and resolve health problems in the community
  3. Evaluate health intervention programmes based on scientific evidence
  4. Communicate effectively on current public health issues
  5. Enhance knowledge and skills through continuous self-learning
  6. Propagate the awareness and knowledge on critical public health issues
  7. Conduct themselves with good attitude, values and behavior
  8. Function as a confident public health officer
  9. Provide effective leadership based on situational needs

The programme is structured into one academic year of teaching consisting of two semesters of 14 weeks each. Candidates are required to complete all the courses listed in both semesters above. They carry a total of 40 units consisting of 32 core units and 8 units of Research Project.
 
Supervision and Achievement Report
 
Academic supervisors amongst the lecturers of the Department Of Community Medicine and Unit of Biostatistics & Research Methodology will be appointed to supervise the candidate. They will closely supervise the candidates and will fill up the supervisor report form at the end of each semester.
 
Teaching and Learning Approaches
 
The coursework is delivered through lectures, class presentations (theory), practicals, field visits and a research project.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should possess the following:

1.    Candidate MUST possess Medical Degree, such as MBBS, MD, MBChB or equivalent qualification accepted by the University Senate and is registered with the Malaysian Medical Council [MMC]
  • Refer MMC’s portal for the list of recognized institutions : https://mmc.gov.my/medical-education-recognition/
  • Candidates holding degree from unrecognized institutions are required to sit and pass the Malaysian Medical Qualifying Examination [MQE] prior admission

2.    Candidate MUST also possess at least 2 years experience after graduation, either in hospitals or other institutions certified and accepted by the University Senate

3.    Local candidates are also required to attend a pre-test/interview before the final selection

4.    Foreign candidates are required to go through a 3 to 6 months clinical attachment and assessment at the respective department prior admission

5.    Candidate MUST also in good physical and mental condition

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

(Applicable for International Applicants Only)

  • A minimum of Band 5 for IELTS; or
  • A minimum score of 40 for TOEFL (Internet-based); or
  • A minimum of Band 7.5 for TOEFL Essentials (Online); or
  • A minimum score of 154 for Cambridge English: Advance (CAE)/Proficiency (CPE) /Preliminary (PET) /First (FCE)/ Linguaskill Online; or
  • A minimum score of 47 for Pearson Test of English (PTE); or
  • A minimum of Band 107 for CIEP Level (ELS); or
  • A minimum of Band 3.5 for Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

Exemption CAN BE CONSIDERED to candidate if:

  • English is the candidate’s mother tongue or National Language; or
  • Candidate graduated from an Institution of Higher Learning in which the medium of instruction at Bachelor and/or Master degree level is English (statement of proof required)
